General Information About Tulum

Mayan ruins tower over the sea in Tulum. The formerly walled city was one of the last to be built by the Mayans, and its archaeological sites are incredibly well preserved. Take a break from the beach to visit El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God. Explore an underground river under a canopy of stalactites in the sacred caverns of LabnaHa Eco Park, or dive into Cenote Dos Ojos to snorkel inside of caves in the middle of a forest.

Tulum Culture and History

Culture

Tulum has an interesting cultural blend, combining traditional Mayan families with recent newcomers, mostly from Europe (especially Italy) and North America. For this reason, Italian restaurants abound in Tulum and the Riviera Maya , and nightlife attractions include such imports as flamenco dancing.

History

The site might have been called Zama, meaning the City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise. Tulum stands on a bluff facing east toward the Caribbean Sea. Tulúm is also the Yucatán Mayan word for fence, wall, or trench. The walls surrounding the site allowed the Tulum fort to be defended against invasions. Tulum had access to both land and sea trade routes, making it an important trade hub, especially for obsidian. From numerous depictions in murals and other works around the site, Tulum appears to have been an important site for the worship of the Diving or Descending god.

Landscape

Tulum National Park One of the Yucatán’s most impressive Mayan ruins and spectacular subterranean formations sit side by side on the sun-drenched Caribbean coast.Tulum archaeological site is relatively compact compared with many other Maya sites in the vicinity and is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. Its proximity to the modern tourism developments along the Mexican Caribbean coastline and its short distance from Cancún and the surrounding "Riviera Maya" has made it a popular Maya tourist site in the Yucatán Península. Daily tour buses bring a constant stream of visitors to the site. The Tulum ruins are the third most-visited archaeological site in Mexico.

Tulum Nightlife

Since this is Mexico, you’ll find margaritas at every turn. But Tulum’s cocktail scene is well-developed (and well-priced), so venture beyond the typical lime-and-tequila concoction and order the expertly made cocktails at Casa Jaguar and Gitano. Mezcal is another favorite here—you’ll see it on every cocktail menu, as is Mexican gin, which is growing in popularity. And if you're downtown, don’t miss Batey, which specializes in mojitos made with local fruit and sugarcane that’s pressed right in front of you. The nightlife scene gets rowdy during the holidays—perhaps the most renowned is the full-moon party at the Papaya Playa Beach Club.
